Be Ready to Go Make Your Personal Preparedness Kit Personal

April 24th, 2017 Fort Saskatchewan: May 1st marks the anniversary of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Wildfire, and one of the largest evacuations in Canadian history. Local mutual aid emergency response organization Northeast Region Community Awareness Emergency Response (NRCAER), wants residents in our region to Be Ready to Go.

 Nearly 90,000 people had a short amount of time to flee, many leaving behind homes and possessions they would never see again. “Imagine having 20 minutes to gather what you need and get out – not knowing when you’ll be back, or what you will come back to,” says Brenda Gheran with NRCAER. “I think we can all agree it would be overwhelming, so the time to think about and prepare for it is before an emergency happens,” Gheran says.

 Planning ahead and putting together an emergency preparedness kit can make a big difference to your safety and your ability to bounce back from any emergency. “Kits are important, however you need to make your personal kit personal, to reflect your individual needs,” emphasizes Gheran.

 In addition to water, food, first aid kits, flashlights and blankets, Gheran recommends having copies of important documents, including passports, health care cards, social insurance cards, insurance policies, prescriptions and contact numbers in kits, to be ready to grab and go if needed.

Sherritt Exercise Tests Multi-Agency Response

October 6, 2016 Fort Saskatchewan: On the morning of October 6th, Sherritt International held an emergency response training exercise at its Fort Saskatchewan facility.

"We do a large scale activity every five years to challenge our assumptions and make necessary adjustments to our emergency preparedness plans to ensure our employees and communities are safe," says Mark Fermandell, Sherritt’s General Manager. "We appreciate the collaboration and tremendous effort put in by our partners such as the local first responders, mutual aid partners and local government agencies during the planning and execution of this exercise. Having our partners input and participation will allow us to improve emergency preparedness capabilities with our neighbours as a whole and will make our communities safer and stronger together."

Multi-agency exercises provide an opportunity for mutual aid partners to work together and strengthen joint response capability in the region, according to Brenda Gheran, Executive Director of Northeast Region Community Awareness Emergency Response (NRCAER), the region’s mutual aid emergency response organization. "In addition to exercise evaluators and observers from about 20 organizations, a number of our members and partners had active roles in the Sherritt exercise including Agrium, Dow, Fort Saskatchewan RCMP and the Fort Saskatchewan Fire Department."

"Sherritt has a comprehensive emergency management program and a long history of working with our local fire department as well as others in the region through NRCAER," says Fort Saskatchewan Fire Chief, James Clark. "Participating in exercises at industry sites is a benefit to our firefighters, as they get familiar with a specialized response and experience how we work collaboratively with our local industry for safety." As part of the exercise, the City of Fort Saskatchewan also activated its Emergency Operations Centre, providing a training opportunity for City staff.

Sherritt Exercise October 6, 2016

September 26, 2016 Fort Saskatchewan: The region’s mutual aid organization, Northeast Region Community Awareness Emergency Response (NRCAER) announces that an emergency response training exercise is being hosted at Sherritt in Fort Saskatchewan on Thursday, October 6th from 8 a.m. until noon.

On the morning of the exercise, emergency response vehicles may be visible in the area, as crews are dispatched from their home location to the Sherritt facility.

"Exercises provide the opportunity for our members and partners to test and continuously improve response protocols," says Brenda Gheran, NRCAER Executive Director. "Extensive effort is put into designing these simulations and we appreciate the participation of our members from planning through to exercise completion." In addition to Sherritt, responders from Fort Saskatchewan Fire Department, RCMP, Agrium and Dow will be involved in the field response. A number of partner agencies and regulators will observe the exercise.
